WATERLILY (ISBN # 0-8032-6579-4) $ 18.00 (227 pages)
Waterlily is a novel of Indian Life - of the Dakotas. But apart from dealing with an actual people at a more-or-less-identifiable time and place, it has little in common with the conventional historical fiction centered on famous people and major events. This outstanding book was written by Ella Deloria, herself a Dakota and an accomplished ethnologist, who sought to record and preserve traditional Dakota ways through this imaginative recreation of life in the camp circle. It is of special value because it is told from a woman’s perspective – one that is much less well known than the warrior’s or the holy man’s. More fully and compellingly than any ethnological report, and with equal authority, it reveals the intricate system of relatedness, obligation, and respect that governed the world of all Dakotas as it takes the protagonist, Waterlilly, through the everyday and the extraordinary nary events of a Dakota woman’s experience.

The Story of Alkali Lake (56:40
minutes) (ISBN 1-896905-39-0) $ 50.00
This dynamic story of individual and community recovery is told in the words of the people who lived it. Native Indian Culture and religion guided the Shuswap people long before the white man’s history in British Columbia began, but by the year 1940, several generations of the Shuswap people had been subjected to the culture breaking process of residential schools, while being forced to live in an artificial town created around a church building. Stripped of their native culture and religion, the Alkali Lake people were left with a void in their lives that begged to be filled. Thus they were ripe for the introduction of the devastating force of alcohol. This story of heartfelt recovery from almost complete cultural and spiritual destruction is true. All the incidents depicted occurred between 1940 and 1985.
